The Blue Ridge Mountain Rescue Group (BRMRG) is a member of the Appalachian Search and Rescue Conference (ASRC), an emergency resource that manages and assists in the search and rescue of lost people and aircraft throughout Virginia and its bordering states. Our organization is comprised of volunteers who dedicate extensive amounts of time for rigorous training, search missions, group function, preventative instruction, and public awareness. Training consists of both vertical and semi-technical rescue, land navigation, search management, wilderness survival, and wilderness first aid.

The State Center for Blue Ridge Folklore For over 30 years Ferrum College's Blue Ridge Institute & Museum has documented the folkways of the people living in and around the Blue Ridge Mountains. Through gallery exhibits, the Blue Ridge Folklife Festival, the Blue Ridge Farm Museum, the Blue Ridge Heritage Archive, the BRI Recordings series and innovative outreach programming, the BRI promotes a special understanding of regional folklife for all ages and audiences. At the same time the Institute's focus adds a unique element to Ferrum College's modern academic programs.

The Blue Ridge Soaring Society is a club operation located near New Castle, Virginia in scenic Craig County. The area is surrounded by the Jefferson National Forest, where the Appalachian Trail stretches through the wilderness of Virginia The mountain ridges running through the area provide great ridge flights for long cross country flights. When weather conditions permit, wave flights are also possible. The BRSS has a high altitude waiver window, allowing for flights up to 23,000 feet. Every September, the BRSS hosts the Region 4 South contest. One of the most notable contests was in 1990, when 17 of the 25 pilots completed a 1000 km task, covering ridges in 4 states.
